A New Kitchen For An Old House In Santa Barbara

This is an old house. She's 92 to be exact. What's that saying about not teaching an old dog new tricks? I agree. An old house is not going to budge when it come to certain things, especially at 92. I can't change the footprint because of set backs and the usual rules governing a historic house. And I can't mess around much with windows or doors and why would I?  They are all really beautiful, with old arches and screens and large french patio doors So that leaves us with the interior walls, which I had initially thought could be moved  and reworked to   enlarge the spaces visually. Then a few weeks ago, I had a visit from a person who used to live in this house. She was in her 70's and her daughter had recently passed away. She wanted to see if she could find this house again  because she and her daughter had enjoyed it here so much.   Her parents had moved to Santa Barbara from the Midwest and had rented this house from the original owner who was then ver...

Getting Ready For Spring Gardening: Tips & Inspiration

Nothing is better than that first sunny warm weekend in early spring. You slip on the grubby garden shoes like a broken in pair of bedroom slippers and grab the pruners and your old friend the garden hoe. My favorite small perennial shovel is so worn the wood handle feels  soft and smooth from hours of digging.   And while I don't have nearly the amount of chores as I have had in the past, every thing is pretty much the same....like riding a bike...just on a smaller scale.   I usually hit the vegetable garden first.   These are Sweet 1000's from last year and I have a few cherries already planted. If you think you can't grow a vegetable to save your life, just try a cherry tomato plant.  They will grown in spite of your brown thumb....trust me on this one.   If you're just starting a vegetable garden try to give yourself at least 18 inches of well composted soil.   Depending on what you want to grow, most plants take about 3 months to get to the ...

Thoughts on Design, Metropolitan Home and Chit Chat

Well Ok....lets just get caught up! No excuses, just mounds of life stuff that creeps in and makes the days fly by. Happily I wave bye bye to this crazy winter and yell hello to spring.

Live Moss Centerpiece DIY

A better title for this should be something like: The Secret Life of Moss Moss is one of those strange and wonderful plants that we often see on a hike in a dark woodlands area It also may be growing on the side of an old shed or an old tree stump. It is not a fungus and is actually beneficial to most gardens so if you have some enjoy it

Project Design: Exceptionally Clever Chairs

Over the years I've slipped covered upholstered, painted, designed and re-used just about anything and everything I could think of in order to make a chair more than just a place to sit.

Garden Project: Creating Dry Creek Beds

The beauty of a garden is that every day it changes a bit. New seasonal flowers bloom, butterflies perch and flutter overhead and the bees, lizards and small birds hurry about getting on with the business of the day

Jessica and Jennifer: A Beverly Hills House Makeover

A lot of thought goes into a personal space and a blog is just that. Somewhere in the last year my blog morphed into something I didn't recognize. I kept editing the look, taking away one week and adding back another. I enjoyed writing again and then I'd quit for a while, taking yet again, another month off to see if I really wanted to do this anymor

The Kitchen Considered: The English Scullery & Cooks Kitchen

It was sad to see Downton Abbey come to an end wasn't it? Much of the storyline was shared at dinner or at luncheon Love the candles and the pine cones scattered on the table.   I think this was a pheasant hunt scene.

Work...Life...Balance: Note To Self

Modern Country: A Style Evolution

There's nothing like looking at old photos of yourself to remind you, that you never want your hair to look like it did in 1980, at least mine ; ))

Own Your Style: A Cheerful Winter Wardrobe

The first couple months of every New Year is my favorite time to  clean and organize my closets. Is is yours too? No room is off limits.   Kitchens, bathrooms and pantry's are usually full of weird odds and ends  that end up in the garbage pail.   Why do I always have an extra can of pumpkin? and what's up with all the red pepper flakes? Clothes closets are always challenging because it's sometimes hard to giveaway a beloved skirt or handbag that might be the item you wish you had saved down the road.   Remember that denim skirt you made from a pair of jeans Sophomore year?   Yea that one....don't ya wish you still had it? BTW....just for laughs google: home made jeans skirt...no words can describe these skirts  how about the tooled leather thingy from Cabo circa 1993 (clearly a case of too much Cerveza)   I actually have seen furniture that I have sold/consigned or donated show up in antique malls.   Always a weird feeling....especially...
